Last time I made oatmeal, I was pretty horrified. It was terrible, unless I loaded it down with so much sugar that it might as well have been Fruit Loops. BUT…Tumblr, you really love oatmeal, and so this morning I decided to give it another try.
I used this recipe from The Healthy Foodie. Here’s her fabulous picture of the oatmeal— see how she pours milk around the oatmeal when she’s done? I’d never even heard of doing that, but tried it today.
I didn’t add the cottage cheese or the walnuts, because the cottage cheese didn’t sound appetizing and I was too hungry to wait for walnuts to toast. I also used a whole banana instead of a half, skim milk instead of soy, and added about a half tablespoon of brown sugar to the top.
AND IT WAS SO DELICIOUS.
For real. I love the milk poured over top— at first it was a great contrast between hot and cold, and then as the milk eventually mixed with the oatmeal, the oatmeal because super creamy. It was so delicious that when I was full and couldn’t eat any more, I was sad. When I was driving to workout, I was thinking about how I wanted to be home eating more oatmeal. I even considered making another version of The Healthy Foodie’s oatmeal for lunch.
OATMEAL WAS ON MY MIND.
Would I make it again? Without doubt.
Are they easy to make? Not as easy as a bowl of cereal, but pretty damn easy overall. If you can buy chopped dates, I’d recommend it— I bought whole ones and they were annoyingly sticky to cut.
Is it healthy? Yes! It kept me full for ages, contained whole grains and milk for some added protein, and only had a smidge of added sugar— most of the sweetness came from the bananas and dates.
On a scale of one to chocolate cake, how delicious is it? 7, easy.
So anyway, now I’m super pumped about oatmeal and am questing for more recipes. Anyone have a great one that’d like to share?
